Early computers were all desktops but with the technological advancements coming in, laptops are newer variants of computers. Though laptops became an instant hit due to their portability, traditional desktops were not done away with. Rather both laptops and desktops continue to co-exist due to their own set of advantages and disadvantages.
If you travel a lot, officially or due to personal reasons and you cannot afford to stay disconnected from internet. You may need your computer for presentations and documents. Under the circumstances, laptop is your best choice. But if you are not much of a traveller, then probably you will be happy to stick to your old desktop.
Desktops have a general advantage over laptops that they do not operate on batteries. However they are dependent on electricity and cannot run without the power supply. Desktops are genrally better equipped in terms of computer configuration with higher disk space and memory. They can also be upgraded easily. Laptops, on the other hand, are not easily upgradeable in terms of configuration and also suffer from a heat generation problem due to poor cooling systems.
Laptops have also been upgraded according to various needs. While there are some high configuration ones to cater to the gamers, there are some basic mini laptops, which act as note books.
